When a person experiences gingival recession, this means that the gums have receded away from the teeth, leaving a small or, in some cases, a significant portion of the tooth root exposed. When a large part of the root is exposed, an aesthetic concern arises, as the teeth appear excessively long and the spaces between them often become more pronounced. Beyond aesthetics, patients may also experience sensitivity to cold or heat, as well as discomfort or difficulty during tooth brushing.
The causes of gingival recession commonly include periodontitis, smoking, anatomical factors, aggressive tooth brushing, unsuccessful orthodontic treatment, among others.
Root coverage with a gingival graft is performed through a microsurgical procedure that involves harvesting a graft from the patient or using a synthetic graft, depending on the extent of the condition. Sutures are placed and are typically removed after approximately 15 days, once healing is complete.
At our Dental Practice, we are equipped with a blood centrifugation unit for the creation of autologous grafts.
